Dear Koen,
You turned 19 Months Old on Monday and I can't believe how fast you are growing up. I know I should have started these letters to you at 1 Month Old, which I have no excuse. So to play catch up, I'll list some milestones and highlights from each month leading up to today.
February 2006: Born on the 3rd, 5:47 PM, Sutter Memorial, Sacramento, CA.
March 2006: Though you are only a month old, we can see that you want nothing to do with being swaddled and desperately want to start running. You are strong enough to partially turn over on your side!
April 2006: You discovered your hands and are practicing tummy time. I started showing you Kung Fu while changing your diapers. Lots of Reggae to put you to sleep. You were able to turn over from your back to your belly.
May 2006: Completey able to roll over every which way.
June 2006: Amazingly, you started crawling. Your Mom introduced you to solid foods and funky smells are starting to come out of you.
July 2006: Assisted Standing and Walking.
August 2006: First word, "Momma!" Your Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma were there to hear your first word. You were able to pull yourself up to a standing position.
September 2006: Conquered crawling, standing, started climbing the couch.
October 2006: Completely walking on your own.
November 2006: Climbed out of your crib. Luckily, there was a box of clothes bedside that broke your fall.
December 2006: First Christmas. First plane trip to So Cal to visit your Great Grandparents.
January 2007: You are obsessed with Basketball. I can't believe how strong you are. For a little guy, you are able to hold and throw a full size league ball.
February 2007: Happy 1st Birthday! We celebrated your big day at Gymboree with some close friends and instead of joining the class, you played with a ball by yourself.
March 2007: One year with no sleep. Your Mom and I can't remember what happened this month. You actually slept for 6 hours straight, we thought something was wrong with you.
April 2007: You've really started to discover your independence and have been getting into everything. Climbing, hanging, pushing, jumping, opening...
June 2007: The neighbor almost burned down two homes with his cigar; you got to see a Fire Engine up close for the first time.
July 2007: Toby used you as a spring board to try and cross the spa at your Lola's house. First time to see the ocean. Long Beach, CA.
August 2007: First trip (two weeks) to the family cabin in Montana.

While you were in Montana for two weeks (which Daddy wasn't there) you became very Mommy attached. So much so that every time she leaves the room you break out in a crying fit. You are starting to get over it which makes me feel selfishly good, because you are wanting to spend more time playing with me. Your current obsession is Thomas the Tank Engine with Curious George coming in at second place and Dora the Explorer a close third. Aside from these obsession's you love playing in the water. With your first visit to the Beach under your belt, the front yard sprinklers or the hose in the backyard is the next best thing.

Since you were two months old, your Mom has been taking you to Mothers Support Groups and Play Groups to help socialize you with other children and for her to engage in adult comminication. Because you've always been more mobile then other kids your age, you have always had the ability to roam your surroundings rather than sitting in one spot drooling on a dirty toy that's been in the mouths of 5 kids prior. Things haven't changed much. The only exception is you are starting to become a tiny bit aggressive when you do pay attention to the other kids. Your Grandpa says it's a phase you are going through, but your Mom is quite embarrassed when the other Mothers look at her with that look of, "why is your child hurting my child?"

Within the last 19 months you have certainly shown us your sense of adventure and love for the outdoors. Your constant "Go! Go!" attitude has certainly kept your Mom and I on the move and has helped us regain a youthful spirit. Thanks for helping us stay semi-young...for the most part.
Love,
Dad |
